Alexander Calder Sculpture Art

A great first step to creating sculptural masterpieces is by starting with paper sculpture. This demonstrates how to transform shapes from two dimensions into three with simple folds and tricks. We introduced our students to the great artist Alexander Calder, inventor of the mobile who also combined monumental forms through seemingly effortless balancing acts. Through using various folding and slotting techniques; students learn about form, combining geometric and organic shapes, and strengthening their fine motor skills through cutting. The students can then adapt their work into mobiles, stabiles, imagined landscapes and sculpture gardens. This introduction to sculpture opens up so many possibilities!
